Silicon Preparation
Silicon nanoparticles can be made by a variety of routes, which may be classified roughly as “chemical” or “physical”. Physical routes generally involve high-temperature and/or vacuum deposition techniques and are favored when the object is to produce small quantities of material for physical or electronic applications and we have therefore restricted our discussion of these methods. Chemical routes tend to produce material of less well-defined composition and size (with some exceptions), but often produce rather large amounts of material and may be compatible with the conjugation of biological molecules at the particle surface.
